Partnering with a system integrator to migrate a national bank from Gen to COBOL
The bank had made a strategic decision to move away from CA Gen and migrate to COBOL. However, due to the bank’s strict coding standards and the complexity of its environment, a generic migration approach wouldn’t suffice. The SI engaged TXP to provide deep CA Gen expertise and automated tooling to ensure a high-quality, standards-compliant migration.
The Client
TXP partnered with a local System Integrator (SI) to deliver a complex CA Gen to COBOL migration for a national bank. The project was part of the bank’s wider strategy to modernise its core systems and reduce reliance on legacy technologies.
The Challenge
- The bank required a migration from CA Gen to COBOL that aligned with strict internal coding and performance standards.
- Standard COBOL output didn’t meet the bank’s requirements—customisation was critical to align with internal standards.
- The SI needed to augment its team with specialist CA Gen knowledge and tooling.
- The migration had to support legacy features such as IMS-DC screen handling and maintain functional behaviour.
The Solution
TXP began by analysing the CA Gen models, fixing any corruption, and upgrading them to a supported version. Using its proprietary automated migration tooling, TXP converted the models to COBOL in a phased approach. The resulting code was functionally equivalent, performant, and hand-maintainable—free from any CA Gen runtime dependencies. The solution was tailored to meet the bank’s specific standards, including performance tuning and screen handling requirements.
The Benefits
- Reduced risk through a phased, automated migration approach.
- Significant cost savings compared to manual migration or continued legacy maintenance.
- Accelerated delivery timelines thanks to automation.
- High-quality COBOL code aligned with the bank’s internal standards.
- Access to TXP’s global CA Gen expertise, including bilingual support in English and the local language.
